Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme

The Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW) is built around excellent laboratories, strategically located in the largest hospital in Malawi, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital closely linked with the community and an integral part of the medical school. These relationships provide a unique opportunity replicated in few centres in Africa to study major health issues spanning both community and hospital.  Our aims are a) conducting research to benefit health and b) training the next generation.

We have six Themes which are:

1. Infection Biology
2. Clinical and Experimental Medicine
3. Vaccines
4. Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health
5. Social Science and
6. Population Health

Our 20 Research Groups work together synergistically in the 6 Themes supported by Clinical, Laboratory, Data and Statistics Research Support Units.  We have Training pathways and funding to attract, train and retain local and international senior scientists.  Our Policy Unit ensures that our research is relevant to local priorities and our Innovation Hub supports translation to impact.
